What Is the Right Age for Botox?

There are two groups of people: those who don’t mind the aging process, and those who do. If you have lines that are developing and you want to age gracefully, but with a little help, we have a solution. At the office of Dr. James DeStephens in Gainesville, FL, we offer the effective anti-aging injectable, Botox, as a solution to temporarily erase the lines and dynamic wrinkles that have formed as a result of repetitive muscular movements in the face.

What Is the Right Age for Botox?

When it comes to Botox, while there is a minimum age requirement due to safety standards, there is no right age. Someone who is in their twenties can begin to notice and be bothered by the moderate lines on their forehead while their face is at rest, while someone ten years older may not have any lines yet. If you have lines that are bothering you and making you feel older than you are and you are over 18 years of age, you are the right age for Botox.

The Twenty-Something

Whether genetics have caused you to develop moderate to deep-set lines before your time, or you are a perfectionist with a few barely visible lines that you want to be treated, Botox will help. You’ll see a quick reduction in the appearance of your lines and wrinkles and can continue treatments as needed to maintain your desired appearance. The total number of units needed to address your issues will vary from one person to the next based on your needs.

The Thirty-Something

The majority of people begin to notice changes in their faces in their thirties. If you’re starting to see deeper lines that don’t fade after a good night’s sleep like they used to, you will love the results that you can get with this injectable. If you have frown lines developing from years of squinting and frowning, Botox can rid you of those lines as well. Now is the perfect time to develop a preventative treatment plan and attack aging head-on.

Forty and Beyond

Confidence doesn’t have an age limit. If you’ve never begun an anti-aging treatment plan inclusive of Botox, but you want to reduce the appearance of moderate to deep lines and wrinkles, it’s never too late to start. As soon as your results set in after your first treatment, you’ll feel as though years have come off of your face. You’ll look rested and refreshed. As soon as your results begin to fade, you can simply schedule a follow-up appointment to maintain results.

What Causes Wrinkles?

Wrinkles and lines form from the repetitive movements of the muscles below the skin. As the aging process takes place, the skin begins to lose elasticity and becomes lax, so those movements that in your younger years may have only made temporary lines in the skin now lead to permanent ones that don’t disappear when the face is at rest. The most common areas where wrinkles develop are the eyes, the mouth, and the forehead.

How Does Botox Treat Wrinkles?

This injectable provides a temporary solution to wrinkles. It temporarily rids the face of dynamic wrinkles and fine lines. Its effects do wear off, at which point another round of injections is necessary to maintain results. If you stop treatments, your face will resume its pre-injection state. It can only continue to treat and prevent wrinkles from rearing their head with continuous, regular treatments.

What Is It?

You’ve heard of it, you’ve seen people who have it, but you may be wondering, technically, what exactly is it? Botox is an FDA-approved neurotoxin in an injectable form that works to temporarily disable muscles so that they cannot contract and lead to more wrinkles or worsen preexisting dynamic wrinkles.

What Does It Do?

This injectable blocks the release of specific neurotransmitters and essentially forces the muscles into relaxation. When the muscles can no longer contract, they cannot push and pull on the skin and lead to the development of new lines or the deepening of pre-existing lines. You’re left with smooth, crease-free skin as a result.

What Areas Does It Treat?

This injectable treats the most common problem areas where dynamic wrinkles develop. These include but are not limited to the forehead, the area between the eyebrows where frown lines form, and the lines that form at the outer corners of the eyes also known as crow’s feet. If you have an area you want to be treated not mentioned, you can discuss it with one of our experts during your consultation.

How Soon Will I See Results?

Results from this injectable require patience. Unlike other cosmetic treatments like dermal fillers where results are instant, these results take a little more time since it takes time for the neurotoxin to completely disable the muscle movement in the area treated. You will begin to notice some results within a few days of treatment, but full results will continue to improve and develop by one-month post-treatment.

How Long Do Results Last?

Results typically last three to four months but will vary from one person to the next. The body will eventually metabolize the injectable’s ingredients and how soon it does that determines just how long your results last. Studies have shown that extreme exercise can play a role in the faster metabolizing of this injectable, while other studies have discovered positive findings of how taking a zinc supplement may increase the longevity of results.

How Often Will I Need Maintenance Injections?

The benefit of this treatment is that you control your results. If six months have gone by and you are beginning to notice that most of your results have faded and you’re ready to schedule a maintenance appointment, you can easily do so.

If you begin to see the faintest line creep back up across your forehead 12 weeks after your injection and you don’t like what you see, you can schedule a follow-up visit as soon as possible. You are in control of maintaining your results. If you’re not sure about how to set up a maintenance plan, we can help schedule your treatments in a manner that would best meet your aesthetic goals.

What to Expect During Your Treatment

If you’ve never experienced a cosmetic injection, you may be concerned or simply curious about what occurs during a typical treatment. Appointments are quick, the injection process involves a very minimal amount of discomfort, if any, and there is no downtime. That means that you can resume most of your daily activities immediately following your appointment.

The Injections

If you have a needle phobia, rest assured that while this treatment does involve the use of a needle, it is an ultra-fine needle. This allows for minimal discomfort during the injection process and also reduces the healing time afterward. We do offer topical anesthetic and when requested, it can be applied to the area of treatment beforehand to minimize any additional discomfort.

Prior to your injection, your injector will cleanse the area of treatment and then administer a series of injections with a predetermined amount of units in each. At that point, your appointment will be complete.

Your Appointment Length

Typical appointments only take 10 to 20 minutes in total. There is no downtime, so you can make your appointment, show up, get your injection, and get on with your day. This treatment is considered a lunch break injectable because you can efficiently get in and out with enough time to still finish your lunch.

Tips for Beginners

If you’ve never received this treatment before, there are some things that you can do to get the most out of your treatment.

Choose a Reputable Injector

Your treatment results are only as good as the injector administering your injections. Almost anyone in a white coat can administer injections, but that doesn’t mean that they have the experience, skill, precision, and artistic eye that gives you the most natural-looking results. When you choose Dr. James DeStephens, you are choosing someone with experience and skill and you can rest assured that your face is in good hands.

Don’t Look for Discounts

It’s one thing if a reputable office is having an injectable special, but it’s another thing if you search online and find dirt cheap injections at a hole in the wall MedSpa. The cheapest injections, 99% of the time, are not going to be the best injections. You will get what you pay for and even worse, your results may be the opposite of what you wanted to begin with. Invest in your face, don’t look for the cheapest injections you can find.

Prepare for Your Appointment

There are some things that you can do to prepare for your appointment to ensure that you get the best results possible. Avoid alcohol the night before your appointment. Also, avoid ibuprofen and aspirin two weeks before your appointment, as well as all other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. These medications and alcohol act as blood thinners, which can result in bruising following your treatment.

Follow the Aftercare Protocol

After your appointment, you will need to be careful not to do anything that could negatively affect your results. Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours post-treatment. You don’t need to skip the gym entirely, but be sure to perform mild, light, movements, or walk at a leisurely pace. Avoid anything that will put pressure on your face for at least 24 hours. This includes aggressive exfoliating treatments. Also, you should avoid lying down for 2 hours post-treatment.

Watch Your Results

After your first treatment, you will want to monitor your results and watch for them to begin to fade. This will give you an idea of the amount of time your injection results will last. Then you will have an idea of how long to wait before scheduling your follow-up treatments.

You will most likely fall into one of three categories: you will metabolize the ingredients very quickly and need to come back sooner than later, your results will last an average amount of time, which is approximately three to four months, or you will be a slow metabolizer, which is rare, and your results will last much longer than the average person. Watching your results fade is the best way to gauge when is the right time to schedule your maintenance visits.
