Juvederm Frequently Asked Questions Answered
At What Age Should I Get Dermal Fillers?
Most people first feel the need to receive Juvederm treatments at the age of 25. This is because Juvederm corrects volume loss caused by a decrease in the production rate of collagen. It is at the age of 25 that your skin starts to produce collagen at a significantly reduced rate. However, the age at which you should receive dermal fillers is highly personal. During your initial consultation, we will create a treatment plan that helps you achieve your aesthetic goals.
Am I Too Young to Get Dermal Fillers?
If you are at least 21 years of age, you are not too young to get dermal fillers. While people under 21 may experience lip asymmetry or severe volume loss in the cheeks due to illness, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has only approved this treatment for certain individuals who are 21 years of age or older. For the safety of our clients, we adhere strictly to FDA guidelines.
Am I Too Old to Get Dermal Fillers?
Most of our clients are under the age of 65 for a couple of reasons. Primarily, the results of treatment don’t last as long when the collagen and elastin in the skin are extremely weak and the aesthetic enhancements needed are extensive. By the time people reach their 60s, the collagen and elastin in their skin are too weakened and they need a great deal of improvement.
Furthermore, individuals over the age of 64 are more likely than individuals in other age brackets to be taking certain medications daily out of necessity. In other words, they can’t stop taking those medications long enough to get them out of their system and mitigate their risk of post-treatment bruising. If you are over 64 years old, we will assess your current health to ensure you’re a good candidate.
Am I a Good Candidate for Juvederm?
Since Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler, there is no risk of an allergy to the medication. While it is a synthetic chemical compound, it mimics the hyaluronic acid already found throughout your body perfectly. Much like bioidentical hormones are indistinguishable from hormones your own body produces, your body cannot tell that the injected medication is synthetic.
It is crucial to note, however, that we will discuss your allergies during your initial consultation. Juvederm injections usually contain a small amount of lidocaine, a local anesthetic, to numb the treatment area and ensure your comfort throughout your session. If you are allergic to lidocaine, we will accommodate your allergy by providing you with an alternative formula and numbing the treatment area with ice or a special cream.
Who Isn’t a Good Candidate for This Type of Dermal Filler?
Women who are pregnant or nursing are poor candidates for dermal filler treatments. Similarly, women who have breastfed within the past six months should hold off on treatment. If you’re unsure if you’re pregnant, we strongly advise that you take a test to confirm that you aren’t pregnant before you consider this treatment. Again, for your safety, we follow FDA regulations.
Unfortunately, pregnancy and nursing aren’t the only two circumstances under which an adult who is 21 years of age or older is a poor candidate. You may also be a poor candidate for this treatment if your primary care physician advises you that you can’t stop taking blood-thinning medications or supplements for several days before treatment to mitigate your risk of bruising after treatment.
How Should I Prepare for Treatment?
During your initial consultation, we will advise you on how to prepare for your injectable. Depending on your health and lifestyle, you may be able to receive treatment as soon as you know which formulas are right for you. However, if you take certain medications or supplements, you must prepare for your treatment by not taking those pharmaceuticals for several days.
Furthermore, it is important that you do not have a sunburn or active infection at or around the targeted treatment area. If you suffer from regular oral herpes outbreaks, take a preventative medication during the two weeks leading up to your appointment. Other steps you should take to prepare include:
- Drinking plenty of water in the two weeks before your treatment
- Eating plenty of protein
- Eating plenty of dark green, leafy vegetables
- Eating plenty of vibrant, colorful fruits
- Abstaining from alcohol for two weeks pre-treatment
- Avoiding tobacco products and similar products
- Minimizing stress
- Minimizing sun exposure
- Mitigating the risk of bacterial or viral infections
How Long Does Treatment Take?
How long your treatment session takes depends on how many areas you are trying to enhance the aesthetic of, the specific results you are looking for and the size of the areas being treated. Furthermore, the number of formulas used to achieve your desired aesthetic will affect how long your treatment session takes.
Expect your treatment session to take anywhere from 15 to 60 minutes. If you’re just looking to augment your lips or treat nasolabial folds, your session will only take around 15 minutes. Contrastingly, if you’re trying to treat nasolabial folds, smooth away smoker’s lines and augment your cheeks, your session will take around an hour.
How Soon Will I See My Desired Results?
You may see your ideal results within 24 to 72 hours of receiving dermal fillers, or, it may take a few months. How long it will take you to see your ideal results after Juvederm depends, primarily, on how many sessions you need to get the look you want. If you only need one session to see your desired results, you will see the initial results within one to three days of treatment and the final results after that.
How Many Sessions Will I Need to See My Ideal Results?
As with any other cosmetic treatment, the number of sessions you will need to achieve your ideal results is highly personal. During your initial consultation, if we determine that you are a good candidate for this type of dermal filler, we will review your aesthetic goals and assess the physical structure of your skin to determine how many sessions you will need to achieve your desired results.
Typically, to correct fine lines and moderate wrinkles, only one treatment session is needed to achieve the ideal results. However, treating fairly severe wrinkles and folds may necessitate two or three sessions to achieve the desired effect.
How Long Will the Results of My Treatment Last?
The durability of results that you can expect depends largely on the formula you opt for. The original formulation typically lasts between three and six months if you take no steps to extend the durability of the results. Keep in mind, this is an extremely conservative estimate, and everyone’s body is unique. Therefore, you may receive treatment with the original formulation and find that your treatment results last nine or 12 months.
Similarly, you may receive an injection with a more robust variation of the medication and enjoy flawless results that last 18 or 24 months. During your initial consultation, we will advise you regarding how long you can expect the results of treatment to last based on the formulas you choose.
What Can I Do to Make the Results of My Treatment Last Longer?
To make the results of your treatment last longer, it’s important that you take care of the health of your skin. One of the best things you can do to maintain skin health is to drink plenty of water. To ensure that you are hydrated adequately, check your urine to confirm that it is either clear or a very pale yellow. It’s okay to have bright green urine as that is an indication of water-soluble B-complex vitamins.
Do not use perceived urine volume or measured urine frequency as an indication of hydration. It is possible to urinate regularly and still be dehydrated. This occurrence is common in individuals who suffer from Type II diabetes, bladder infections and other medical conditions. Furthermore, certain foods, beverages and supplements can cause excessive urination to the point of fairly severe dehydration.
What Else Can I Do to Extend the Duration of My Treatment Results?
Another great thing you can do to maintain the health of your skin is to apply a broad-spectrum SPF 55+ sunscreen whenever you go out during the day and reapply it every four hours, or as directed on the bottle. It is absolutely imperative that you use a broad-spectrum sunscreen because most sunscreens do not protect your skin from the sun’s UVC rays. The UVC rays are the rays that damage your skin’s collagen and prematurely age your skin.
While individuals with more melanin in their skin can be protected adequately with a sunscreen providing a sun protection factor of 30, we encourage our clients to apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 55, because you can never have too much UV ray protection. If you try a sunscreen and do not feel you are getting adequate protection, ask your dermatologist for advice.
Can This Type of Dermal Filler Help Me Smooth My Scars?
Unfortunately, there is no formulation currently indicated for the treatment of scars. However, you may achieve the aesthetic you’re looking for with Radiesse, a calcium hydroxyapatite-based dermal filler designed to treat the deepest creases and wrinkles and filling in recessed scars. If you’re looking to treat another type of scar, such as a keloid scar, dermal fillers are not ideal, but we offer services that treat such scars.
